If he had not of met Mr. Keating his father would of ran his life and he would of been miserable and he would of committed suicide either way.

Dead Poet Society Theme

In the film Dead Poet Society the main theme is not to conform, just like Mona Lisa smile. In the film the boys were always taught to do things their father says, what their mother said, or what grown-ups say. The boys are then taught to not conform to society. Their teacher Mr. Keating helps them to live life and not be held down by their fathers, teachers, and things that are expected by society. One example of this is when Mr. Keating told them to rip out a section of the book, explaining how to create good poetry. He does this because he wants the boys to know that you don't have to depend on a book to see if their work is good or not. Another example was when Mr. Keating made four people walk in a line. They were walking different at first but then they started to become synchronized. Then he says that you shouldn't follow what others do so he told everyone to walk different from the person you see so everyone started to walk funny. He does this to show them that they can follow others and what people do but be different about it.

Mona Lisa Smile questions

Katherine Watson's teaching was unorthodox, because she did not teach from the book. In school teachers usually teach from a book. In her class she showed them slides of things that many don't consider as art. She taught them to not just look at the painting but to "look beyond the paint." She used art to teach them a lesson to life.
During this time period, women's expectations were to go to college, get married, and stay home watch the kids, cook, and clean. When Joan got an application to study at Yale, Betty was shocked. If I were Betty I would of been happy for her, to see a girl or lady in this time period pursuing a career was crazy, but she was going to take a risk. She was going to do what many don't.
